  Leadership Competition | Digby Scallop Days Queen

  As a part of the Digby Scallop Days Festival

 

The Digby Scallop Days Queen Leadership Competition has been part of the Digby Scallop Days Festival since its origin in 1975. This annual competition exists to select and prepare young women to represent the town and municipality of Digby and our unique way of life.  

 

Through the generosity of their sponsors, candidates are able to participate in the Digby Scallop Days Queen Leadership Competition. The young women involved gain many practical skills that are vital in today’s world. The Digby Scallop Days Queen has many responsibilities including: community representative, spokesperson, time manager, coordinator and most importantly, role model.  

 

The successful candidate to become Digby Scallop Days Queen will be eligible to compete in the Queen Annapolisa Leadership Competition during the following year's Apple Blossom Festival. Since 1933, as long as the Queen Annapolisa Leadership Competition has existed, the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia – from Windsor to Digby, has had a Queen Annapolisa to serve as the official spokesperson for Apple Blossom Festival.   

  1. The candidate must agree to be available for all FIVE DAYS of the Princess Affairs Events and Scallop Days Festival events and must participate in all scheduled events as required. The candidate must also, from time to time, agree to personal appearances as reasonably requested by the Digby Scallop Days Association, up to and including the following year’s Digby Scallop Days Festival and to do so with the proper behaviour and attitude (as set out in paragraph 7 of this Agreement). The cost of these appearances for the Digby Scallop Days Association is at the expense of the individual candidate.

  2. The candidate must agree: during the time with the Digby Scallop Days Association, and prior to candidacy, that they are single and will remain so for the duration of their reign and have never been married. Further, the candidate must state they have not had a child and are not pregnant.  

  3. The candidate must not have previously competed in the Digby Scallop Days Leadership Competition, and must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant.    

  4. The candidate must be female and not more than 22 years of age by December 31st in the year of the candidates Digby Scallop Days Festival. A photocopy of the candidates birth certificate must accompany the candidates entry form without exception. By providing this document, the candidate is attesting to the validity of this document.    

  5. The candidate must have successfully completed high school and have a graduation certificate or equivalent, or provide proof of graduation eligibility. A photocopy of this document must accompany the candidates entry form.    

  6. The candidate will be evaluated through: submitted resume, personal interviews (and possibly the candidate's response to an impromptu question that may be asked during Coronation Ceremonies), public speaking opportunities (both content and delivery) and documented community interests. The candidate will be judged on: personality, intelligence, clarity, maturity, poise, and overall demonstrated representative behaviour.  

  7. The candidate must exhibit proper etiquette and behaviour at all times. The candidate will be made fully aware of the Digby Scallop Days Association expectations for proper behaviour by the Princess Affairs Coordinator. The candidates must present an appropriate personal appearance (as outlined in the Leadership Candidate Handbook, and including, but not limited to, covering visible tattoos and refraining from wearing excessive jewellery) and be aware that she is representing the Digby Scallop Days Association. The Digby Scallop Days Association reserves the right to terminate such representation for conduct unbecoming of a candidate. This termination shall be at the sole discretion of the Digby Scallop Days Association and the Digby Scallop Days Association is the sole arbiter of what is deemed appropriate. An example of cause for immediate termination would be: any inappropriate behaviour, including, but not limited to, substance abuse, public disorderly conduct, public displays of intoxication, and inappropriate liaisons with the Digby Scallop Days Association assigned escorts, hotel guests and/or staff, or Festival directors/staff. Lastly and most importantly, any and all photographs or videos the Digby Scallop Days Association may consider to be inappropriate shall not be displayed on any and all social media sites or anywhere the general public may be able to access these images.

    Should the candidate be privileged to receive the coveted title of Digby Scallop Days Queen she will be expected to adhere to all codes of conduct and proper etiquette and behaviour for the entire reign of Digby Scallop Days Queen. If these codes of conduct are violated the candidate will be asked to relinquish her duties. Subsequently the First Lady in Waiting will assume all Digby Scallop Days Queen responsibilities.

  8. The candidate must state they have never been in, and are not presently involved with, any photography, video or film associated with the production of adult films or entertainment.    

  9. The candidate must never have been convicted of a criminal offence or have any criminal offence charges pending.  

  10. The candidate must advise the Princess Affairs Coordinator of any health problems, prescribed medications, special diets, allergies, etc so that prompt action can be taken in case of a medical emergency. A fully completed medical form outlining any dietary, or health issue needs, is required to participate in the official Digby Scallop Days Association transportation. As part of the Digby Scallop Days Association adherence to the Federal Privacy Act, all information is kept sealed and confidential.    

  11. The candidate is not permitted the use of liquor or illegal/improper drugs during the festival and during the reign of Digby Scallop Days Queen in any public area. Any abuse of alcohol or illegal/improper drugs is cause for immediate dismissal of the candidate's representation of the Digby Scallop Days Association.  

  12. The candidate is not permitted to smoke during the festival or at any time that she would be seen as representing the Digby Scallop Days Association in the eyes of the public.  

  13. The candidate must have resided in the Municipality of Digby for the twelve (12) month period immediately prior to the selection of said candidate.  

  14. The candidate must permit the use of their image from any Digby Scallop Days Association events, in the form of live or taped video or film production, for promotional purposes permitted by the Digby Scallop Days Association.  

  15. Any candidate who relinquishes their community representation of Digby Scallop Days Queen, for any reason, will be required to refund any and all prizes/ money awarded to them as the representative for Digby Scallop Days Association. The candidate must therefore return in full and in original condition, to the Digby Scallop Days Association, all such prizes/money within seven (7) days of relinquishment.  

  16. The candidate shall only wear, without exception, the Digby Scallop Days Association titles or awards that she have received to any and all Digby Scallop Days Events.  

  17. The candidate agrees to represent the Digby Scallop Days Association in a positive manner at all times.

In the event of a medical emergency and no one can be contacted, Digby Scallop Days Princess Affairs Coordinator will arrange to take the candidate to the hospital if deemed necessary.
